Indian music is rooted in the melodic system found in the Sama Veda (Samaveda) and the musical science described in Gandharva Veda. The Sama Veda contains chants and melodies used in sacrifices, providing a practical framework for pitch, intonation, and melodic flow. Gandharva Veda goes further by formalizing the theory of music—ragas, melodies, performance rules, and the aesthetics of singing and playing. Together, these two traditions supply both the practical musical language and the theoretical rules that underlie Indian classical music. The other Vedas focus more on hymns or rituals rather than music, so they aren’t considered the source of Indian musical tradition.
